Toen Reinier Baas als puber Jesse van Ruller voor het eerst gitaar hoorde spelen, was hij met stomheid geslagen. Hij had geen idee dat wat hij Jesse hoorde spelen ook maar in de verste verte mogelijk was. Dat moment bracht Baas er mede toe om een eigen stijl te ontwikkelen: “Ik zou Jesse niet eens kunnen imiteren als ik zou willen, dus ik moest iets anders verzinnen.”
Van Ruller was destijds net bekend geworden als winnaar van de prestigieuze Thelonious Monk Award (1995). Baas won in 2025 de Boy Edgar Prijs, de belangrijkste Nederlandse jazzprijs. Baas en Van Ruller worden inmiddels beiden tot de top van de Europese jazzgitaristen gerekend. Slechts af en toe treden ze op als duo, maar ze vinden het geweldig om elkaar uit te dagen en te verrassen wanneer ze de kans krijgen. En dat gaan ze zeker doen in Brouwerij Martinus. Een niet te missen concert!
Reinier Baas is een gitarist en componist uit Nederland met een doe-het-zelf-aanpak en een eigenzinnig oeuvre. Hij heeft elf albums uitgebracht als (mede)leider, met een grote verscheidenheid aan stijlen. Zijn muziek wordt gekenmerkt door onvoorspelbaarheid met een geruststellend gevoel voor algehele structuur. Zijn veelgeprezen albums ‘Mostly Improvised Instrumental Indie Music’ en het ambitieuze ‘Reinier Baas vs. Princess Discombobulatrix’ leverden hem beide een Edison Award op. Hij heeft opgetreden met vele bekende muzikanten, waaronder Louis Cole, David Binney, Fuensanta, Cory Smythe, Marta Warelis, Hans Teeuwen, Ramon Valle, Nora Fischer, Jesse van Ruller, Mary Halverson en Gregory Porter.
Reinier Baas is de winnaar van de Boy Edgar Prijs 2025, de meest prestigieuze prijs voor jazz en geïmproviseerde muziek in Nederland. “Reinier Baas trekt de jazz het nu in,” aldus de jury. “Met humor, lichtheid en diepgang vernieuwt hij, slaat bruggen tussen scènes en generaties, en durft telkens opnieuw risico te nemen.”
Jesse van Ruller begon zijn studie in 1990 bij Wim Overgaauw aan het Hilversums Conservatorium, waar hij in 1995 met de hoogst mogelijke cijfers afstudeerde. In hetzelfde jaar won hij de Thelonious Monk International Jazz Guitar Competition; daarmee was hij de eerste Europeaan die deze prestigieuze prijs in de wacht sleepte. De jury bestond uit John Scofield, Pat Metheny, Jim Hall en Pat Martino. Hij nam vele albums op onder zijn eigen naam, speelt met zijn eigen trio en kwartet (met Karel Boehlee, Frans van Geest en Martijn Vink), en is ook te horen bij veel andere bands, zoals het Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw, Michiel Borstlap Group, het Piet Noordijk Quintet en als duo met gitarist Maarten van der Grinten.

When Reinier Baas as a teenager first heard Jesse van Ruller playing the guitar, he was completely dumbfounded. He had no idea that what he heard Jesse playing was even remotely possible. That moment was one of the factors that led Baas to develop his own style: “I wouldn’t even be able to imitate Jesse if I wanted to, so I had to come up with something else.”
At the time, Van Ruller had just made a name for himself as the winner of the prestigious Thelonious Monk Award (1995). In 2025 Baas won the Boy Edgar Prize, the most important Dutch jazz award. Baas and Van Ruller are now both regarded as among the very best European jazz guitarists. They only perform as a duo from time to time, but they love challenging and surprising each other whenever they get the chance. And they’ll certainly be doing just that at Brouwerij Martinus. A concert that is not to be missed!
