Fie Schouten, Mark Haanstra & PCC in concert
Onze jaarlijkse PCC-avond staat dit keer in het teken van de basklarinet. Klarinettist en docent Fie Schouten en haar getalenteerde studenten Dion Hoorn en Santiago Giesler-Garcia gaan ons laten luisteren naar dit prachtige maar onderbelichte instrument, in samenwerking met basgitarist en docent Mark Haanstra en andere studenten van het Prins Claus Conservatorium (PCC).
De basklarinet is een veelzijdig instrument: een jukebox vol ongewone geluiden, met een diepe en sonore klank. Het leent zich zowel voor klassieke en hedendaagse gecomponeerde muziek als voor jazz en improvisatie. Jazzicoon Eric Dolphy bracht de basklarinet onder de aandacht in de jazz, maar het instrument is toch altijd wat onderbelicht gebleven. Op deze avond vol jong talent zetten we de basklarinet daarom in de schijnwerpers.
De avond voert van Misha Mengelberg, een duo van percussionist Bart Vrees, tot een choro en een lied van Louis Andriessen. Ook worden er eigen bewerkingen van jazz standards gespeeld. De studenten en docenten doen dit in diverse ensembles in wisselende bezettingen. De aanstormende talenten van het PCC zijn de aanjagers van de avond: een uniek concert vol frisse, dynamische en prikkelende muziek!
Fie Schouten is een toonaangevende Nederlandse klarinettist, met een voorliefde voor de lage klarinetten. Ze is gespecialiseerd in actuele muziek, zowel gecomponeerd als geïmproviseerd. Ze is artistiek co-leider van het Basklarinet Festijn, waarvan in 2025 alweer de vijfde editie plaatsvindt, met een internationale line-up. Sinds 2013 is ze verbonden aan het PCC, waar ze zowel aan de klassieke als aan de jazzafdeling lesgeeft.
Bassist Mark Haanstra staat bekend om zijn herkenbare geluid, groove en flexibiliteit. Hij speelde over de hele wereld met onder anderen Henry Hey, Oene van Geel, Chris Cheek, Marcel Veenendaal, Ellen ten Damme, Kris Berry,Yuri Honing, Simon Phillips en Terry Bozzio. Hij won diverse prijzen, zoals tweemaal het Nederlands Jazz Concours met respectievelijk de groepen Nemesis Quartet en Geel. Sinds 2004 is hij hoofdvakdocent basgitaar en ensemble aan het PCC.
This year’s annual PCC evening will focus on the bass clarinet. Clarinettist and teacher Fie Schouten and her talented students Dion Hoorn and Santiago Giesler-Garcia will introduce us to this beautiful but underrated instrument, in collaboration with bass guitarist and teacher Mark Haanstra and other students from the Prince Claus Conservatoire (PCC).
The bass clarinet is a versatile instrument: a jukebox full of unusual sounds, with a deep and sonorous tone. It lends itself to classical and contemporary composed music as well as jazz and improvisation. Jazz icon Eric Dolphy brought the bass clarinet to the attention of the jazz world, but the instrument has always remained somewhat underrated. That is why we are putting the bass clarinet in the spotlight on this evening full of young talent.
The evening will take us from Misha Mengelberg, a duo with percussionist Bart Vrees, to a choro and a song by Louis Andriessen. There will also be performances of original arrangements of jazz standards. The students and teachers will perform in various ensembles with changing line-ups. The up-and-coming talents of the PCC will be the driving force behind the evening: a unique concert full of fresh, dynamic and exciting music!
Fie Schouten is a leading Dutch clarinettist with a preference for low clarinets. She specialises in contemporary music, both composed and improvised. She is artistic co-leader of the Bass Clarinet Festival, which will celebrate its fifth edition in 2025 with an international line-up. Since 2013, she has been affiliated with the PCC, where she teaches in both the classical and jazz departments.
Bassist Mark Haanstra is known for his recognisable sound, groove and flexibility. He has played all over the world with Henry Hey, Oene van Geel, Chris Cheek, Marcel Veenendaal, Ellen ten Damme, Kris Berry, Yuri Honing, Simon Phillips and Terry Bozzio, among others. He has won several awards, including twice at the Dutch Jazz Competition with the groups Nemesis Quartet and Geel, respectively. Since 2004, he has been a principal subject teacher of bass guitar and ensemble at the PCC.
