Aan tafel met Samba! Femke Smit, Lucas Santana & Friends
Als knallende afsluiting van ons jazzjaar nemen we je graag mee naar Brazilië — het land waar jazz, bossa nova en samba samenkomen in de immer lichtvoetige ‘saudade’ maar ook in opzwepende en dansbare samba’s.
Zes veelzijdige topmuzikanten die zich volledig thuis voelen in dit genre, met als leading lady zangeres Femke Smit, gaan 2025 afsluiten met een concert vol melodie en opwekkende en dansbare klanken. Buiten is het winter, maar binnen in Brouwerij Martinus gaan deze muzikanten de zon laten schijnen!
De eerste set speelt zich af in Copacabana, het prachtige strand in Rio waar de bossa nova geboren werd. Met klassiekers van Jobim, Veloso, Buarque en met verborgen parels zal de band u meenemen naar deze prachtige stad.
De tweede set gaan de stoelen aan de kant en nemen de muzikanten plaats aan tafel met het publiek er omheen. Dit is de traditionele manier om samba te spelen. We gaan de heuvels op, naar de buurten waar de samba daadwerkelijk leeft. De zaal verandert in een dansvloer, met stoelen aan de weerskanten voor wie toch liever zit. De muziek is uitbundig, ritmisch en opzwepend, geïnspireerd op de muziek van Femke Smits band Roda da Hollanda.

Femke Smit is Nederlands maar zingt Braziliaanse muziek alsof ze er geboren is. Misschien was het een vorig leven, misschien is het puur toeval, maar in de Braziliaanse muziek voelt ze zich thuis. Met verschillende projecten (onder meer Cantorias, Roda da Holanda en een duo met Mike del Ferro) drukt ze haar stempel op de Braziliaanse scene in Nederland, en ook in Brazilië timmert ze aan de weg. Met de groep Cantorias won ze in 2024 de Edison Nationaal Vocaal en werd ze genomineerd voor de publieksprijs. Haar uitbundige verschijning en meeslepende manier van vertolken van samba, bossa nova en Música Popular Brasileira (MPB) maken Femke een zangeres die je echt meeneemt in een muzikale reis.
Lucas Santana is geen onbekende voor ons: met zijn kwintet speelde hij in oktober 2023 in Brouwerij Martinus prachtige jazz en Braziliaanse muziek. Zijn improvisatietalent is ongekend op zowel saxofoon als op fluit. Inmiddels is hij uitgegroeid tot een gewaardeerde componist die in het afgelopen jaar in samenwerking met productiehuis JOC de voorstelling Condomblé maakte, voor een tienkoppig orkest en twee dansers. De voorstelling verkende de diepgaande en veelzijdige geschiedenis van de Afrikaanse diaspora in Zuid-Amerika.
Met Marijn van der Linden maakte Smit in 2020 het album Notícias do Nelson en speelt ze in Roda da Holanda. Udo Demandt (en ook Lucas Santana) speelt in zowel Cantorias als Roda da Holanda. Nathan Klumperbeek was al de bassist van Smits allereerste band (Mrs Smit and the Boys from Brasil). Allemaal enorm getalenteerde muzikanten die stuk voor stuk een naam hebben opgebouwd in de jazz en de Braziliaanse scene.

Six versatile top musicians who feel completely at home in this genre, with singer Femke Smit as the leading lady, will close 2025 with a concert full of melody and uplifting, danceable sounds. It may be winter outside, but inside Brouwerij Martinus these musicians will make the sun shine!
The first set takes place in Copacabana, the beautiful beach in Rio where bossa nova was born. With classics by Jobim, Veloso, Buarque and hidden gems, the band will take you to this beautiful city.
For the second set, the chairs are moved aside and the musicians take their places at the table, surrounded by the audience. This is the traditional way of playing samba. We head up into the hills, to the neighbourhoods where samba really comes alive. The hall is transformed into a dance floor, with chairs on either side for those who prefer to sit. The music is exuberant, rhythmic and rousing, inspired by the music of Femke Smit’s band Roda da Hollanda.

Femke Smit is Dutch but sings Brazilian music as if she were born there. Perhaps it was a previous life, perhaps it is pure coincidence, but she feels at home in Brazilian music. With various projects (including Cantorias, Roda da Holanda and a duo with Mike del Ferro), she is making her mark on the Brazilian scene in the Netherlands, and she is also making a name for herself in Brazil. With the group Cantorias, she won the Edison National Vocal Award in 2024 and was nominated for the audience award. Her exuberant appearance and compelling renditions of samba, bossa nova and Música Popular Brasileira (MPB) make Femke a singer who truly takes you on a musical journey.
Lucas Santana is well-known to us: in October 2023, he played beautiful jazz and Brazilian music with his quintet at Brouwerij Martinus. His talent for improvisation is unparalleled on both the saxophone and the flute. He has grown into a highly regarded composer who, in collaboration with production company JOC, created the performance Condomblé for a ten-piece orchestra and two dancers last year. The performance explored the profound and multifaceted history of the African diaspora in South America.
