BOI AKIH
Op woensdag 22 april verwelkomen we een bijzonder duo in Brouwerij Martinus: BOI AKIH, dat bestaat uit zangeres Monica Akihary en gitarist en componist Niels Brouwer. Al meer dan vijfentwintig jaar verkent dit duo met grenzeloze nieuwsgierigheid nieuwe muzikale wegen. Monica Akihary won in 2023 de prestigieuze Boy Edgar Prijs en BOI AKIH won in 2024 de Cultuurprijs Indonesië.
Het nieuwste album van BOI AKIH, Entangled, is een compositie als een reis door onderling verbonden klankwerelden: een enkele, doorlopende vorm waarin kleinere spanningsbogen ontstaan en weer opgaan in een grotere structuur. Er zijn momenten van liedachtige helderheid, die vervolgens weer overgaan in meer abstracte melodische en ritmische landschappen. Het verschijnt in mei bij het vermaarde label ENJA Records.
Twee jaar geleden speelde BOI AKIH in Tuni, een bergdorp op Ambon, met het Molukse Bamboo Wind Orchestra. Op een dag kwam een van de fluitspelers niet opdagen. Later legde hij uit dat hij honing was gaan halen en zo hevig was gestoken dat hij twee dagen op bed moest liggen. Hij had geen voorzorgsmaatregelen genomen, omdat hij dan teveel honing zou kunnen nemen en de bijen daardoor zou schaden.
Dat verhaal bleef Niels bij, toen hij las over plannen om de opwarming van de aarde tegen te gaan door fabrieken te bouwen die kooldioxide uit de lucht moesten halen. Dat zou leiden tot nog meer productie, nog meer fabrieken – een nachtmerriescenario. Terwijl bomen en bossen van nature al koolstof uit de lucht halen en ons schaduw, schoonheid en leven bieden. Vanuit dat contrast begon Niels te componeren.
Dit is muziek in het spanningsveld tussen compositie en improvisatie. Spontaniteit voedt de urgentie en intensiteit, terwijl een onderliggende structuur haar houvast geeft. De muziek put vrijelijk uit vele muziekstijlen zonder zich aan een stijl te onderwerpen. Ze ontstaat in het moment van creatie zelf – ook op 22 april in Brouwerij Martinus!
On Wednesday 22 April we welcome a special duo to Brouwerij Martinus: BOI AKIH, consisting of singer Monica Akihary and guitarist and composer Niels Brouwer. For more than twenty-five years, this duo has been exploring new musical paths with boundless curiosity. Monica Akihary won the prestigious Boy Edgar Prize in 2023 and BOI AKIH won the Indonesian Culture Prize in 2024.
BOI AKIH’s latest album, Entangled, is a composition that takes listeners on a journey through interconnected soundscapes: a single, continuous form in which smaller arcs of tension arise and merge back into a larger structure. There are moments of song-like clarity, which then transition into more abstract melodic and rhythmic landscapes. It will be released in May on the renowned ENJA Records label.
Two years ago, BOI AKIH played in Tuni, a mountain village on Ambon, with the Moluccan Bamboo Wind Orchestra. One day, one of the flute players did not show up. He later explained that he had gone to collect honey and had been stung so badly that he had to stay in bed for two days. He had not taken any precautions, because he thought that would encourage him to take too much honey and harm the bees.
That story stayed with Niels when he read about plans to combat global warming by building factories to remove carbon dioxide from the air. That would lead to even more production, even more factories – a nightmare scenario. Whereas trees and forests naturally remove carbon from the air and provide us with shade, beauty and life. Niels began composing based on that contrast.
This is music that straddles the tension between composition and improvisation. Spontaneity fuels the urgency and intensity, while an underlying structure provides stability. The music draws freely from many musical styles without submitting to any one style. It arises in the moment of creation itself – including on 22 April at Brouwerij Martinus!
