Yuri Honing Acoustic Quartet: This is Not David Bowie
Voor saxofonist Yuri Honing was David Bowie al vroeg een belangrijke inspiratiebron. Niet alleen vanwege de muziek, maar vooral vanwege de compromisloze manier waarop hij zichzelf telkens opnieuw uitvond. Bowie staat voor hem symbool voor een artistieke houding: de voortdurende drang om te veranderen, grenzen open te breken en verschillende werelden met elkaar te verbinden.
Met het Yuri Honing Acoustic Quartet gaat hij in Brouwerij Martinus Bowies werk opnieuw benaderen vanuit de eigen muzikale taal, met Wolfert Brederode op piano, Tijs Klaassen op contrabas en Joost Lijbaart op drums. Fragmenten van Bowie’s composities, harmonieën, sfeerwerelden of artistieke ideeën worden daarbij gebruikt als vertrekpunt voor nieuwe stukken en interpretaties. Soms blijft een melodie herkenbaar aanwezig, soms is alleen de geest van een nummer nog voelbaar.
De liefde voor Bowie klonk al eerder door in projecten van Yuri Honing, onder meer in interpretaties van nummers als Bring Me the Disco King en After All — dat laatste nummer werd inmiddels miljoenen keren gestreamd. Zijn nieuwste album This is not David Bowie, dat in november uitkomt en waarvan we in Brouwerij Martinus een voorproefje krijgen, is een zoektocht naar wat Bowie vandaag nog steeds relevant maakt.
Want uiteindelijk gaat het Yuri Honing niet alleen om Bowie zelf, maar om de vraag hoe kunst kan blijven bewegen. Hoe muziek nieuwe verbindingen kan aangaan zonder haar eigenheid te verliezen. En hoe een artiest, net als Bowie destijds, trouw kan blijven aan nieuwsgierigheid en verbeeldingskracht — juist in een wereld die voortdurend verandert.

With the Yuri Honing Acoustic Quartet, he will be reinterpreting Bowie’s work at Brouwerij Martinus through his own musical language, with Wolfert Brederode on piano, Tijs Klaassen on double bass and Joost Lijbaart on drums. Fragments of Bowie’s compositions, harmonies, atmospheric worlds or artistic ideas will serve as a starting point for new pieces and interpretations. Sometimes a melody remains recognisably present, while at other times only the spirit of a song is still palpable.
Yuri Honing’s love for Bowie has been evident in his previous projects, including his interpretations of songs such as Bring Me the Disco King and After All — the latter of which has now been streamed millions of times. His latest album, This is not David Bowie, due for release in November and of which we will get a preview in Brouwerij Martinus, is an exploration of what makes Bowie still relevant today.
In the end, for Yuri Honing it’s not just about Bowie himself, but about the question of how art can continue to evolve. How music can forge new connections without losing its individuality. And how an artist, just like Bowie in his day, can remain true to curiosity and imagination — especially in a world that is constantly changing.
