Ben van Gelder Trio
We starten ons najaarsseizoen met het Ben van Gelder Trio! Dit wordt een mooie avond met pure eigentijdse jazz vol ritmische en harmonische vrijheid.
Ben van Gelder behoeft geen introductie meer: hij wordt nationaal én internationaal beschouwd als een supertalent. Als tiener won hij al belangrijke prijzen, waaronder het Prinses Christina Concours, de Stan Getz/Clifford Brown Fellowship en de Deloitte Jazz Award. Op zijn zeventiende verhuisde hij naar New York, waar hij bijna tien jaar woonde en werkte met musici van wereldformaat als Mark Turner, Joe Sanders en Ambrose Akinmusire. Daar ontwikkelde hij ook zijn herkenbare stijl als solist en componist.
Ben komt naar Brouwerij Martinus met Ton Felices op contrabas en Wouter Kühne op drums, twee grote jazznamen binnen de Nederlandse jazzscene.
Een deel van het concert wordt een tribute aan jazzlegende Sonny Rollins, die in mei dit jaar overleed. Bens waardering voor Rollins ontstond na het lezen van diens recent uitgebrachte biografie. Samen met Ton en Wouter gaat hij onder meer stukken spelen van Rollins’ prachtige album Freedom Suite – in een triobezetting zonder piano, de favoriete formatie van Rollins, die ruimte laat voor vrijheid, contrast en spanning, zonder harmonische restricties.

We will kick off our autumn season with the Ben van Gelder Trio! This will be a wonderful evening of pure contemporary jazz, brimming with rhythmic and harmonic freedom.
Ben van Gelder needs no introduction: he is regarded both nationally and internationally as a prodigious talent. As a teenager, he had already won major awards, including the Prinses Christina Concours, the Stan Getz/Clifford Brown Fellowship and the Deloitte Jazz Award. At the age of seventeen, he moved to New York, where he lived for almost ten years and worked with world-class musicians such as Mark Turner, Joe Sanders and Ambrose Akinmusire. It was there that he developed his distinctive style as a soloist and composer.
Ben is coming to Brouwerij Martinus with Ton Felices on double bass and Wouter Kühne on drums, two major figures on the Dutch jazz scene.
Part of the concert will be a tribute to jazz legend Sonny Rollins, who passed away in May this year. Ben’s admiration for Rollins grew after reading his recently published biography. Together with Ton and Wouter, he will perform pieces from Rollins’ magnificent album Freedom Suite – in a pianoless trio, Rollins’ favourite line-up, which allows for freedom, contrast and tension, without harmonic restrictions.
