Guus Janssen & George Hadow
Meesterpianist Guus Janssen en avant-gardedrummer George Hadow maken samen spannende muziek die zich het best laat vergelijken met een potje snelschaken. Er is geen tijd om echt na te denken zoals dat bij componeren kan: hier is de muziek en tijd om ergens spijt van te hebben is er niet. Die muzikale spanning gaat dit topduo ons laten voelen in Brouwerij Martinus.
George Hadow is een Engelse drummer die in 2012 verhuisde naar Amsterdam, waar hij nu een prominente figuur is in de avant-gardescene. Hij heeft uitgebreid door Europa getoerd, voornamelijk met de paranoïde punkjazzband KUHN FU, waar hij sinds 2017 deel van uitmaakt. Met een breed scala aan invloeden, waaronder vroege jazz, vrije improvisatie, rock en ingewikkelde Rajasthani- en Carnatic-ritmes, heeft hij een unieke benadering van het drumstel.

Pianist Guus Janssen maakte bij ons in Groningen grote indruk met een serie tribute-concerten met muziek van onder anderen Thelonious Monk, Misha Mengelberg en Charles Mingus. Sinds begin jaren tachtig leidt hij zijn eigen ensembles, van pianotrio tot 11-tet en orkest. Voor zijn werk op het gebied van de jazz en geïmproviseerde muziek ontving hij de Boy Edgar Prijs, zijn compositorisch werk werd bekroond met de Matthijs Vermeulen Prijs, en voor zijn gehele oeuvre ontving hij de Johan Wagenaar Prijs.

Master pianist Guus Janssen and avant-garde drummer George Hadow create thrilling music together that can best be compared to a game of speed chess. There is no time to really think things through, as one might when composing: here, the music is the focus, and there is no time to have second thoughts. This top-class duo will let us experience that musical tension at Brouwerij Martinus.
George Hadow is an English drummer who moved to Amsterdam in 2012, where he is now a prominent figure on the avant-garde scene. He has toured extensively across Europe, mainly with the paranoid punk jazz band KUHN FU, of which he has been a member since 2017. With a wide range of influences, including early jazz, free improvisation, rock and intricate Rajasthani and Carnatic rhythms, he has a unique approach to the drum kit.

Pianist Guus Janssen made a great impression with us in Groningen with a series of tribute concerts featuring music by artists including Thelonious Monk, Misha Mengelberg and Charles Mingus. Since the early 1980s, he has led his own ensembles, ranging from piano trios to 11-piece ensembles and orchestras. For his work in the field of jazz and improvised music, he received the Boy Edgar Prize; his compositional work was honoured with the Matthijs Vermeulen Prize; and for his entire body of work, he received the Johan Wagenaar Prize.
