Ronny deCarlo, het alter ego van de Colombiaans-Nederlandse gitarist Roenik Roa Espinosa, klinkt als een personage rechtstreeks uit een Spaghettiwestern. Een genre dat Roenik zeer aan het hart ligt, vooral door de soundtracks van Ennio Morricone. Op zijn album FONQUE NOUVEAU brengt hij in de afsluiter ‘Turtle Island’ een eerbetoon aan deze Italiaanse filmcomponist.
Ronny deCarlo’s soulvolle sound neemt je als in een film mee naar onder andere de Canyons en de Sahara. Je herkent echo’s uit funk, gospel, jazz en R&B, maar door hiphop-technieken, zoals samples, electronica en loops, is de muziek helemaal van deze tijd. Met zorgvuldig georkestreerde arrangementen en gerichte improvisatie word je op een geraffineerde wijze het verhaal ingetrokken.

Ronny deCarlo, the alter ego of the Colombian-Dutch guitarist Roenik Roa Espinosa, sounds like a character straight out of a Spaghetti Western. A genre that is very close to Roenik’s heart, especially because of the soundtracks by Ennio Morricone. On his album FONQUE NOUVEAU he pays tribute to this Italian film composer in the closing track ‘Turtle Island’.
Ronny deCarlo’s soulful sound takes you like a movie to the Canyons and the Sahara. You recognize echoes from funk, gospel, jazz and R&B, but hip-hop techniques such as samples, electronics and loops make the music completely contemporary. Carefully orchestrated arrangements and focused improvisation draw you into the story in a refined way.
